THE FAÏENCERIE DE GIEN
The Faïencerie de Gien earthenware factory was founded in 1821 in Gien in the Val de Loire, in the heart of France.
The 19th century saw several production sites spring up, carrying the ancestral earthenware tradition forward. The history of the factory spans two-hundred years and is linked to the name of its founding father, the British-born Thomas Hall. Hall came to Gien and acquired the land and buildings belonging to the Minimes convent, set on the banks of the Loire.
At that time, the town of Gien offered many advantages: it was an important trading post, there was an abundance of on-site raw materials (clay, sand and siliceous stone from the Loire), and most importantly, the Loire enabled wood to be brought in from the forests around Orléans for the kilns.
